Step-by-Step Tulip-Drawing Tutorial

Today, we will be drawing a lovely tulip in just seven steps! Be sure to have a blank sheet of paper, a sharpened pencil, and a nice eraser on hand. The sketch should take no longer than five minutes to finish, so feel free to proceed to the first step when you're ready!

Step 1

Step 1

1. Start With a Petal

The petals are shaped sort of like teardrops, so keep that in mind as you sketch them out. The first petal will be the last one on the right side of the tulip. We will draw the petal in the center last.

Step 2

Step 2

2. Add a Petal

Draw the left petal, and keep it a similar teardrop shape.

Step 3

Step 3

3. Fill It In

Sketch a tulip petal nestled in between the two you just drew. If you noticed in the first two steps, the petals are both separated by a bit of empty space. This is where the central petal will be.

Step 4

Step 4

4. Add More Petals

Draw the rest of the petals that are pushed farther in the back of the tulip. Only the tips will be exposed at the top.

Step 5

Step 5

5. Add the Stem

Now that the tulip bulb is completed, we will draw the stem. It has a simple shape that pretty much goes straight up and down. I decided to make the stem a little curvier to make it look like it's leaning slightly.

Step 6

Step 6

6. Add Vein-Like Details

Draw vein-like lines on each flower petal. This is known as the sepal.

7. Finalize the Details

Include more details on both the tulip petals and the stem. I drew in some shading lines to create a more realistic appearance.

Voted up and BEAUTIFUL! My father was an artist with a rare gift for capturing a person's soul in their portrait. I can barely draw recognizable stick figures. LOL

So I am fascinated with the process of art! Beautiful tulip! I am going to give it a try this week, and let you know how I did. I loooooove sunflowers too! Thank you for these tutorials! I think for someone to actually take the time to draw a flower for me, would be very romantic on a card or letter - or a picture to put on my desk. Lovely idea! Thank you! I would like to do this for my children, and (future) grandchildren someday too!
